Warts Causes

Certain categories of human papilloma virus (HPV)- a virus present in skin cells of the wart- is one of the major warts causes. This HPV affects mucosa (moist membranes) and skin, and there are more 100 different HPV strains responsible for various types of warts.

Generally, HPV is passed through skin-to-skin contact, and can also be transferred indirectly through contaminated objects, including shoes, towels, area surrounding swimming pool and floor of communal changing area. If warts are present on the skin, they are considered contagious. The virus spreads rapidly if the skin is soft, wet, or encounters a rough surface. They can also spread to other body parts.

HPV can spread through:

  • Knocking, scratching, or biting the wart
  • Biting nails or sucking fingers (if they have warts)
  • Shaving legs or face

Breaking up or bleeding of wart also accelerates virus spread, making the patient more vulnerable.

Warts on Feet- Planter Warts

Warts on feet are known as ‘Planter Warts’- rough, small growths that appear on heels and balls of feet (parts that bear most pressure). This pressure causes warts to grow inwards, under the hard and thick skin layer (callus). Planter warts are caused by HPV, that enters skin through tiny breaks or cuts at the bottom of feet.

Planter warts are not a serious health concern, and usually disappear on their own without any treatment, but you can also get them removed by consulting a healthcare provider.

Warts on Hands- Common Warts

Warts on hands are known as ‘Common Warts’, and usually they are grainy, small growths on hands and fingers. Common warts are soft to touch, and often appear pattern of tiny black dots that are clotted small blood vessels. These are caused by a virus transmitted by touch, and can develop after 2-6 months of exposure to the skin.

Common warts are harmless and usually disappear on their own, however, most of the people get them removed as they look embarrassing.

Warts Treatment

Following are the commonly used warts treatment methods:

  • Salicylic acid (warts removal cream)– stronger warts removal cream, with salicylic acid. They work by removing layers of wart, slowly and gradually.
  • Cryotherapy (freezing)– the doctor would apply liquid nitrogen to the wart, stimulating immune system to fight viral warts.
  • Other acids– if salicylic acid and freezing fail, trichloroacetic acid might be used.
  • Minor surgery– the doctor would cut the bothersome tissue.
  • Laser treatment– laser is used to cauterize (burn) the tiny blood vessel. The infected tissue dies, and wart falls off.

Warts on Face Treatment

Most wart creams contain harsh chemicals, that should not come close to mouth, nose, or eyes- hence expert supervision is required for warts on face treatment. Commonly used methods include cryotherapy (the procedure might leave dark spots on face and people with light skin should avoid this method), surgical removal, and immunotherapy (either the person’s immunity of stimulated, or topicals are used to irritate the wart and trigger immune system).
