What is Dandruff? Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment

January 25, 2023

Dandruff is basically a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis- although not serious or contagious, dandruff can be embarrassing or difficult to treat. It is a common condition, that causes skin on the scalp to flake. These flakes are generally more visible in darker hair, or when they fall on the shoulders. They can also make scalp dry or itchy.

While mild dandruff can be treated with gentle shampoo, mostly a medicated dandruff shampoo might be required for complete cure.

Types of Dandruff

Getting information regarding different types of dandruff is essential for knowing and treating the underlying cause of dandruff. There are multiple types of dandruff, including:

  • Dry skin dandruff: the most common type of dandruff that occurs in winters when cold weather dries out the skin (including skin of scalp). Washing hair with hot water can also lead to dry skin dandruff. Dry scalp becomes irritated and sheds skin cells, making scalp itchy and producing small white flakes.

Dry skin dandruff can be cured using moisturizing dandruff shampoo, and with home remedies like oiling hair, that prevent scalp from drying out.

  • Oily skin dandruff: There are glands below skin surface that produce sebum- oily substance that moisturizes and protects the skin. If the sebaceous glands produce excess oil, it clumps together causing dandruff, making hair oily and irritating scalp. Oily skin dandruff is generally larger than dry skin dandruff, with yellow flakes and oily flakes.

Regular use of dandruff shampoo with salicylic acid can help in reducing oily skin dandruff.

  • Fungus-related dandruff: Malassezia is a common type of fungus found on skin of human beings, that can sometimes trigger inflammatory response and produce dandruff and other conditions, including eczema.

Dandruff shampoo with zinc pyrithione, (Malassezia-inhibiting ingredients) or tea tree oil can help in treating fungus-related dandruff.

  • Disease-related dandruff: certain skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis can stimulate excess production of skin cells, hence forming scaly skin on scalp. These skin cells then combine with dirt and sebum oil to produce dandruff. The condition can be treated by using the appropriate dandruff shampoo.

Dandruff Causes

Contrary to the general belief, dandruff is not caused due to poor hygiene conditions. The various causes of dandruff include:

  • Dry skin
  • Irritated and oily skin
  • Contact dermatitis- sensitivity to certain hair care products
  • Malassezia- a yeast like fungus that feeds on scalp oils
  • Certain skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis
